Tannery Road: Where School is Cool
A school gives less fortunate children a chance

Bangalore, India - The HOPE foundation school at Tannery Road has over 400 students – an increase from 271 last year. These children live on or around a small mountain of refuse that continually spews smoke.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the children journey down a sometimes slippery slope from home to school, with dexterity that would make a mountain goat proud. Some parents begin to work rolling fragrant incense sticks or other low paying jobs.

At school, classes begin in earnest as teachers also become mentors. Around noon all the children receive a simple, hot, nutritious meal. Afterwards, the children enjoy recess in a large play area.

As the day winds down around 4 p.m. and classes end, each child climbs back up the hill. They leave either individually or in small groups - most likely praying silently that life at home, would be just as meaningful as it is in school.
