Typhoon Morakot Devastates Taiwan
International Church of Christ Responds

“they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. ..”
~ Matthew 24:39

On August 8, 2009, Typhoon Morakot struck Taiwan for three days. It was originally predicted to be only a middle scale typhoon, but it brought record breaking rainfall. It led to severe damage from flooding and landslides in southern Taiwan. In Pingtung County’s mountainous area in Southern Taiwan, the cumulative rainfall was 2,500 mm - close to the annual rainfall for the whole region. This is Taiwan's worst flood in 50 Years.

A village with 600 residents was buried under a landslide and many other villages are still waiting for rescue...

Officials have confirmed over 100 casualties. As reported by the media, a village with 600 residents was buried under a landslide and many other villages are still waiting for rescue due to disconnection of water and electricity supply and transportation issues. Everyone in Taiwan is focusing on disaster relief and raising funds and supplies for the typhoon victims!

We are grateful for God’s protection. All the disciples and their families in the Kaohsiung church (Kaohsiung is the largest city in Southern Taiwan) and the other churches in Taiwan are safe. This week, the disciples are rallying to volunteer for the relief effort. Through the coordination of the Chinese Christian Relief Association, disciples will go to Donggang Town of Pingtung County and assist in the relief, including sterilization and comforting the victims. Volunteer recruitment was carried out at our last mid-week service and over 140 disciples have signed up and they were all keen to bring God’s love to the needy after this disaster.

After this first stage of disaster assistance, the church will plan for a long term assistance.

Please keep these typhoon victims in your prayers - that they can see the “rainbow” from God after the flood!
