Typhoon Ondoy Update

October 17, 2009

Before and after - see images of what our Center of HOPE was before Ondoy and what it is today.

The needs are mounting. 90% of our own staff has lost their homes. Hundreds of children need therapy to deal with the trauma from this experience.

In Binan, 2,247 families are living in 15 evacuation centers located around Binan. Many families are just not able to assess their needs. Many more have yet to receive any aid.

In Laguna, we have only located 20 out of the 36 students that go to our school. Many of our staff and volunteers are living in temporary housing. They have lost as much as the people they are serving.

Amid the hopelessness, we have made 500 complete relief packages for families. More is desperately needed.

As the HOPE worldwide staff and the staff of the Metro Manila Christian Church survey the damage, more information about the needs of Ondoy's victims is coming in. While we expect the needs to increase, here is the current situation:
  • Most of the 2,400 disciples in the Metro Manila church are in immediate need of food and water
  • About 4% or about100 disciples need immediate medical attention
  • About 4% or about 100 disciples have suffered severe damage, which includes losing their homes, businesses and cars
  • 45% or over 1,000 of the disciples have suffered heavy damage, which includes essential home items, like utensils, appliances and clothes
  • close to 20% or 500 of our members have had basic damage to property, but their primary need is food and water

Please continue to pray for the thousands of people in the Philippines whose lives have been destroyed by Typhoon Ondoy.

After Typhoon Ondoy: Delivering Aid to People in Great Need
The news from our partner church in Manila, the Metro Manila Christian Church, is heartbreaking. As of Sunday evening, we understand at least 10 members of the church are missing and many are still stranded on roof tops waiting for help.  Many homes have been damaged or lost. At this time, it appears that every member of this church of will need some kind of disaster assistance in the days and weeks to come.
HOPE worldwide Philippines - Watch this video from the Philippines about the destruction of Typhoon Ondoy

The Center of HOPE worldwide in Laguna, Philippines that serves abused children was immediately evacuated. Typhoon Ondoy produced flooding at the property and throughout the country. Many of the children left with only the clothes on their backs (and no shoes).

HOPE worldwide will partner with the Metro Manila Christian Church and other cooperating churches in the United States to bring desperately needed help to victims of the storm. Our priorities will be church members and their families and children from the Center who find themselves without a home.

Victims of the devastation in the Philippines are traumatized and, in many cases, have little more than the clothes on their backs. Won't you join us in helping them?
