Two Step
HOPE worldwide United KingdomTwo Step is a housing programme, which has been helping homeless people in London and throughout the UK for over ten years. Finding long-term accommodation sometimes takes days, even weeks. What makes Two Step very unusual is that we offer Stopover. through this scheme, volunteer hosts will put up a client while we are working on their longer term needs- in their own home! Taking in strangers is a risk, although we do as much as possible to minimise the risks. However, our hosts understand that a homeless person may often have literally nowhere else to turn.

Initially started as a rent deposit scheme in 1993, it has expanded in recent years to offer a wider range of solutions to our clients. We work with shelters and hostels across London, housing associations and cooperatives, local authorities and private landlords to try to meet the many needs faced by the homeless. We have connections with other advices centres, community groups, statutory and voluntary organisations in and around London- we will always aim for the best, rather than the first option available based on individual circumstances.

When they eventually move into their new home, we will be on hand to assist them settle in- this can mean helping them fill in forms, find work or educational opportunities, liase with landlords or other agencies on their behalf- in short, helping them sustain their tenancy in order that they do not become homeless again.

One Day At A Time (ODAAT)
HOPE worldwide United KingdomODAAT stands for One Day At A Time and is a drug and alcohol recovery programme. ODAAT is somewhat different from other rehabilitation programmes in that it was not born and it did not develop at a planning committee but rather it evolved as a community response from the crack and crime ridden streets that its founders came from.

When recovering addict Henry Wells, aka ‘the Rev’, left detox for the umpteenth time in Philadelphia in 1983, he came out to mayhem. North Philadelphia, like many other inner city areas in the USA at that time was suffering a crack epidemic that brought with it unprecedented levels of crime and gun crime and saw HIV and AIDS infection rates soar to 30 in North Philadelphia in the early to mid 1980’s an average of one in three properties were simply abandoned by owners who fled for their lives and many of these were taken over as squats and crack houses. Despite concerted efforts, Government, local government and law enforcement agencies were completely overwhelmed and communities were left to fend for themselves as best they could. In the middle of this, gathering a dozen like-minded individuals around him, Henry Wells reclaimed an abandoned property as a ‘recovery house’ and established a simple framework of principles and rules that developed in the ODAAT recovery programme. 20 years on, ODAAT in Philadelphia is a network of 25 recovery house and ‘haven homes’, funded and supported by the city council and has helped literally thousands recover from their addiction and brought the Rev and ODAAT international acclaim.

In 1993, following a visit to ODAAT in the USA, HOPE worldwide established an ODAAT recovery house for men in the UK. This began initially as a safe house for addicts seeking recovery but quickly developed into a structured, two stage residential programme with professional therapeutic input. Today, ODAAT in the UK, whilst staying true to its credo of peer support, also comprises 12 Step therapy groups, one to one counseling, relapse prevention, anger management and life skills groups as well as social and sporting activities.

Moving On
HOPE worldwide United KingdomMovingOn is a new mentoring programme to offer on-going support to people who have come through our Two Step and ODAAT programmes.

It would offer our clients (mentees) a 6-month commitment to meet with a mentor every two weeks to help them move on in an area of their life. This could include finding a job, more training or education, help with life skills such as budgeting and maintaining long term tenancy, and generally helping a person build their esteem and confidence to life and independent life.
