The 2017 Alaska HYCs will build on tens of thousands of hours of volunteerism to continue to develop the Gateway to the Arctic Camp (www.g2arctic.org) near Talkeetna, AK. Gateway to the Arctic Camp is a service-oriented, agricultural camp that teaches its participants about the significance of serving those in need and the value of hard work. Participants have fun while learning about sustainability, farming processes, and stewardship of the earth. Gateway to the Arctic Camp provides a variety of programing, including sessions for special needs youth and adults. All campers participate in agricultural activities and become equipped with knowledge necessary to raise and harvest crops. The resulting produce from the farm is donated to those in need or sold, with the proceeds directly benefiting programs that support the underprivileged of Alaska. Also, ongoing mentorship during our camps helps participants develop strong character and life skills, including responsibility for one’s work, pride in one’s accomplishments, service to those less fortunate, and strong work ethic. The benefits are priceless, and the possibilities are endless.
The Alaska HYCs will be a two-week long experience in the beautiful Alaskan wilderness. During one week, HYC participants will assist with camp maintenance and construction. The camp is still developing, and so there is a lot of work to be done. Participants will be trained to use the necessary tools to continue building the camp’s facilities and features. Expect hands-on, physically challenging, and dirty days. During the other week, participants will assist with an actual camp program. Campers may be underprivileged youth and/or special needs youth and adults. HYC members will facilitate camp activities, serve as counselors (with proper supervision), and ensure that campers are having fun and learning. Be prepared to support and encourage our campers every moment that they are at camp!
Lastly, no HYC is complete without the opportunity to explore. Our HYC members will have the opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful places in the world. There is potential to explore Denali National Park, go whitewater rafting, hike a mountain, and more!
So, if you’re looking to build your faith in new and exciting ways, and you want see firsthand how service can impact your life and the lives of those you serve, then join us in Alaska for HOPE Youth Corps 2017.
