Hope Worldwide. Bringing Hope. Changing Lives.

Malaysia HVC

We are grateful to have a once in a lifetime opportunity to be chosen as one of the host cities for HOPEww Volunteer Corps (HVC) this 2018! We are excited and looking forward to many overseas volunteers wanting to come to Penang, known as Pearl of the Orient—a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and the food capital of Malaysia!

The 2018 Penang HVC will be a two-week long community service that will give participants a different and meaningful Christmas celebration beyond the borders of tradition. The main focus for Penang HVC is providing education to the most marginalized and vulnerable children – especially children in poor households in urban George Town area, children in “Orang Asli” (indigenous peoples) communities, and Rohingya refugee children. It is also a “servecation” especially for families who would like to have an extraordinary experience that is both life-changing and impactful. Unlike vacations families or individuals spend every year, this event will give them an experiential learning, a lasting impact, and a deep gratitude that only service to others can bring.

Our HOPE worldwide Penang’s MY Reading Program started in 2007 with its objective to help underprivileged children learn and appreciate English in a fun and lively environment. We will help teach English, facilitate interactive games, and engage the students through activities such as singing as well as one-to-one story reading. Our goal is to enhance literacy development in children from low-income families, promote reading for pleasure, improve social and communication skills, and increase children’s confidence in using English in their daily lives and at school. We will also renovate and improve the Penang Center of HOPE’s teaching and library facilities to better conduct classes and make it more conducive for learning.

The Penang HVC also includes community outreach service to indigenous peoples (“Orang Asli” settlements) in the nearby state of Perak which is outside Penang. This is a full-day activity that will challenge you to get out of your comfort zones to meet other’s needs and will surely deepen your love for people. We will also partner with the School of Peace now better known as Penang Peace Learning Center, an education center for children, especially the Rohingya refugees who are not able to go to school and do not get early education because of their refugee status.

During this Christmas season, we will make home visitations, do food distribution, and provide basic necessities to disadvantaged families in George Town. We will also form a Caroling Team as part of our fundraising event in support of HOPE worldwide Penang’s programs. We will be joined by the disciples in Penang Church as we practice and perform Christmas songs to our corporate partners.

After serving for 10 days, participants will have an enjoyable “servecation” for three nights in a beach hotel in Batu Ferringhi, a famous resort destination in the northern coast of Penang island. Families will have time for leisure and recreation experiencing the beach and its spectacular sunset. Participants will also experience an amazing adrenaline rush with a half-day fun time in ESCAPE Adventureplay, a family theme park with exciting and challenging activities that promote wellness in the great outdoors. Of course, no tour of Penang is complete without a stop in World Heritage-listed George Town that boasts a rich cultural heritage blending Chinese, Indian, and European influences. Participants will have time to visit the city’s diverse architectural heritage, its oldest sections packed with 19th-century mosques, churches, temples, and colonial buildings. Indeed, Malaysia is truly Asia!

Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18). In following the steps of Christ, we want you to join us in bringing and being the good news to underprivileged children and communities. Together, we will imitate the heart and put into practice the teaching of Jesus in serving the poor and needy.

Come join us in Penang and together make a difference! Let us bring HOPE and change lives!
