Hope Worldwide. Bringing Hope. Changing Lives.

Papua New Guinea Volunteer Corps

(December 16 - December 30)

The Papua New Guinean highlands are beautiful but also very limited in health service provision. This HVC aims to refurbish the Moroma health clinic in rural Papua New Guinea (Moroma, Simbu province) and engage youth in recreation.

Participants will first travel to the capital city, Port Moresby. Following a brief stay in Port Moresby participants will take a short flight (1-2 hours) from Port Moresby to Mount Hagan followed by a two-hour road trip to the rural project site: the Moroma Sub-Health Centre. This was opened in 2016 following a HVC. Since then it has treated thousands of people in the area who previously were walking 3 to 4 hours to the nearest health facility. In addition to providing primary health care services, it also caters for delivering babies.

The project will refurbish the clinic, which has not had any repairs since its opening in 2016. There will also be some minor construction work to install toilets at the clinic. The area has lots of young people and children and to develop engagement with youth, the program will include the construction of a small skate ramp, introducing skateboarding to youth in the area. Since there is a medical focus to the project, we would love to have medical professionals (e.g. nurses/midwives), but also teachers/educators wanting to engage with young people, and anyone who is up for some adventure. The construction work will be simple and well supervised.
