Guatemala

Community Service Brigade

(August 22 - August 25)

What?

Guatemala has long been a location for CSBs. Beginning in 2011, over 20 brigades have been held in Guatemala, including right after the deadly eruption of the Volcan de Fuego (Volcano of Fire).

Volunteers can serve by spending time with the children while their parents are being seen by the health professionals, teaching children, and sometimes adults, to properly brush their teeth and help protect their teeth by applying a fluoride treatment afterward. Volunteers can also serve in the pharmacy area counting out hundreds of medications that are given out each day or serve in the vitamin station passing out vitamins and anti-parasite treatments that help families overcome waterborne diseases. Community Service Brigades can’t happen without medical professionals! Ideally, we aim to have two adult doctors and two pediatricians. Psychosocial support professionals are also needed and must have a master’s level certification or above to serve in this capacity. Having dentists on the team allows local families to have well-rounded medical care. Pharmacists complete the team and provide critical oversight to the hundreds of prescriptions that are filled. While serving in Spanish-speaking communities, we are always in need of translators as well.

Why?

A large group of local volunteers, a long tradition of community service, and natural beauty make Guatemala an incredible place to go! Guatemalans are warm and endearing, and you will make lifelong friends as you serve alongside local volunteers and medical personnel.
