During the New York/New Jersey HYC, participants will serve as mentors at a summer day camp for children from urban communities. The camp provides an engaging, supportive environment where young people can build confidence, strengthen self-esteem, and develop independence and leadership skills.

Camp activities include arts and crafts, aquatics, biking, strategy games, computer education, dance, drama, nature and science projects, athletics, and literacy activities. Additional resources include a percussion orchestra, recording studio, and agility course, creating opportunities for campers to explore their interests, discover their strengths, and learn through hands-on experiences.

HYC participants will serve as mentors, helping advance three key goals:

  • Stimulate Literacy: Encourage reading, writing, and communication through activities such as reading books, discussing literature, and practicing writing skills.
  • Build Confidence: Strengthen self-esteem and belief in personal abilities through group projects, public speaking, and opportunities for campers to showcase their talents and accomplishments.
  • Develop Self-Awareness: Help young people better understand their emotions, strengths, challenges, and personal goals through reflection activities, journaling, and guided self-assessment.

Through mentorship, relationship-building, and active participation in camp activities, volunteers will help create a positive environment where young people feel encouraged to learn, grow, and recognize their potential.
