Celebrating Women’s History Month

HOPE worldwide • Feb 28, 2022

March is Women's History Month, and this month, we honor the accomplished and visionary women of the past, including those whose contributions have not been adequately recognized and celebrated.

We will also highlight the work and achievements of HOPE
worldwide volunteers and staff who have blazed their own trails while daring to help create a future of endless possibilities and inspire greater hope for all women and girls.

A Lifestyle of Healing & Hope:

Reflections from Pat Gempel & Dr. Cornelia Haener

As March comes to an end, we asked Pat Gempel and Dr. Cornelia Haener to share how this year’s theme applies to their personal experience and the work they have been able to do with HOPE worldwide. Read their responses on Facebook or Instagram.

We got to catch up with one of our long-time volunteers, HOPEww Denver Chapter Director Carmen Hamilton, as she shares words of wisdom about the ways God uses us for transformative change, and

the personal lessons she’s learned about the healing power of a listening ear.

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH THEME

Kelly Baldwin

Fund Development Officer

Q: The Women’s History Month theme for 2022 is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” What about the work you get to do with HOPE worldwide speaks to that theme?

A: I have had the joy of working in several capacities at HOPE worldwide and, in each, I’ve seen the beauty of healing and hope in action. Helping children process the trauma of a hurricane, training youth to effectively channel their passion for fostering shalom in their communities and connecting generous donors with opportunities to meaningfully contribute to transformative work around the world, are just a few of the ways HOPE worldwide has allowed me to participate in God bringing healing and hope to earth.

Senior Director, Volunteer Corps

Q: The Women’s History Month theme for 2022 is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” What about the work you get to do with HOPE worldwide speaks to that theme?

A: Women are often treated as second-class citizens. In some parts of the world, a head of cattle such as a cow is considered more valuable than a woman, and the birth of a girl is deemed a tragedy. At HOPE worldwide the liberation of women is achieved through education, job training, and micro-loans. When a woman is given an opportunity, she can bring her whole family out of poverty.

Q: The Women’s History Month theme for 2022 is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” What about the work you get to do with HOPE worldwide speaks to that theme?

A: Seeing the amazing diversity of gender and race at every level of HOPE worldwide has been incredibly healing and makes me hopeful that other organizations we partner with will be moved to imitate us. The combination of every person’s unique experience, talents, and skills is what makes up HOPE worldwide! My work is the background, administrative work that helps others to shine. I love that we are all good at something different and when we come together, that’s where the magic of community happens!

Q: The Women’s History Month theme for 2022 is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” What about the work you get to do with HOPE worldwide speaks to that theme?

A: I’ve felt very lonely in my discipleship for a very long time – I didn’t understand how I was reading the same gospels as my brothers and sisters in Christ and seeing a much different Jesus than was depicted from the pulpit. When I joined the HOPE worldwide community, I found camaraderie – others who want to live out the full gospel of Jesus. As a HOPE worldwide employee, I have felt seen, and my unique God-given talents and passions valued. God is allowing me to heal from insecurity and frustration and giving me a hopeful vision for the future of our community of believers.

Catherine Shump

Director, Development

Q: The Women’s History Month theme for 2022 is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” What about the work you get to do with HOPE worldwide speaks to that theme?

A: I love working for HOPE worldwide!  It is a joy to connect donors with our programs that are focused on helping others.  This work provides healing and hope to both the donors and those who are receiving the benefit of the donations. When people give to support a cause, it provides meaning and purpose to their lives. This can promote spiritual growth and healing as well as hope for a more meaningful life.  Those who receive the benefit of the donations - whether it be a family receiving relief after a disaster or children in Central America receiving much needed medical and dental care – also receive healing and hope from the care they receive.  What a joy and privilege it is to provide this kind of healing and hope to others.

LendHOPE worldwide Program Coordinator

Q: The Women’s History Month theme for 2022 is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” What about the work you get to do with HOPE worldwide speaks to that theme?

A: I have had the privilege to work on a new HOPE worldwide program that promotes economic empowerment. Hope is a commodity that can easily be taken for granted as there are many people who see no way out of their desperate situations. What I love about this new program is that it creates a community in which we all work together as God’s children, learn from each other, and connect each other with resources (1 Corinthians 3:9). Ultimately, this provides a renewed hope as opportunity and community develop a foundation for economic growth.

Angela Tomlinson

Manager, Community Service Brigades

Q: The Women’s History Month theme for 2022 is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” What about the work you get to do with HOPE worldwide speaks to that theme?

A: Working with our Community Service Brigades, I am blessed and humbled to be on a front row seat of some of the most vulnerable in our world. I am able to sit, listen, extend a hand of comfort, and hopefully offer a small amount of encouragement to those that need it most, but I get so much more in return. Through the last 12 years of CSB’s, women’s empowerment has been on the forefront of our mission and our prayer is to continue to do so.

Dear HOPE worldwide Community, First and foremost, let me express my heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome you have extended to me as the new CEO of HOPE worldwide . It is both an honor and a privilege to be entrusted with this leadership role, and I am excited to embark on this journey with each and every one of you. As I reflect on my life's journey, I am reminded of a pivotal moment that shaped the very essence of who I am today. Losing my mother tragically at the tender age of four taught me the harsh reality of impermanence, of how someone could be there one moment and gone the next. At such a young age, I did not fully understand the concept of death, but what I did understand was the importance of living. James 4:13-15 holds a profound truth that resonates deeply within me: “ Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.’” Our time on this earth is fleeting, and the realization of this truth was the spark that awakened a desire in me to truly live and embrace every moment with purpose and passion. I have found my purpose, my calling, in the mission of HOPE worldwide. The work we do here, touching lives and making an impact by loving our neighbors, allows me to live my passion.

PRESS RELEASE June 27, 2023 HOPE worldwide , a leading non-profit organization dedicated to providing sustainable, high-impact, community-based services, including critical healthcare services, disaster relief, and education, to underserved communities globally, is proud to announce the recognition received by the Lawes Road Clinic in Papua New Guinea during a recent visit by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken . This visit highlighted the impactful work carried out by HOPE worldwide global network member, HOPE worldwide Papua New Guinea (PNG), in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the U.S. government’s largest effort to combat HIV. During his visit to Papua New Guinea, Secretary Blinken had the opportunity to tour HOPE worldwide PNG’s Lawes Road Clinic, which is led by HOPE worldwide PNG Country Director Priscilla Sine Mal, and witness firsthand the incredible efforts undertaken by the dedicated team. The clinic's commitment to improving the lives of the local community in various areas, including HIV prevention and treatment, and treatment for victims of violence against women deeply impressed Secretary Blinken. In his remarks, Secretary Blinken expressed his admiration for the clinic's work, stating, "This was a real privilege to be here at the Lawes Road clinic where quite literally our partners are saving lives, changing lives, every single day." The visit showcased the significant impact of HOPE worldwide Papua New Guinea’s clinic on the region, highlighting its vital role in providing essential healthcare services to those most in need and who often have the most difficult time getting treatment, in part due to the social stigma often associated with their conditions. The Lawes Road Clinic operates under the auspices of the Presidential Emergency Plan For HIV/AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), funded through USAID and implemented in collaboration with FHI 360 and HOPE worldwide . The clinic has been instrumental in providing critical care, support, and testing for HIV/AIDS patients in Papua New Guinea, contributing to the nationwide efforts to combat the disease. This year, PEPFAR celebrates its 20th anniversary, and its 17th year of implementation in Papua New Guinea. HOPE worldwide is honored by the recognition bestowed upon HOPE worldwide Papua New Guinea and the Lawes Road Clinic by Secretary Blinken and remains committed to its mission of transforming communities and improving lives through local, volunteer-based initiatives. With the continuous support of partners like USAID and the unwavering dedication of its teams on the ground, HOPE worldwide and its global network of members like HOPE worldwide PNG strive to create a healthier, more resilient future for all.
