HOPE worldwide COVID-19 Global Highlights: Papua New Guinea

HOPE worldwide Papua New Guinea runs two large health clinics in partnership with the government. When the government announced a countrywide lockdown on March 24, the excellent reputation of the clinic staff and volunteers inspired officials in the nation’s capital of Port Moresby to partner with our clinics on the front lines in the fight against COVID-19. Working with government leaders, HOPE worldwide is training hundreds of nurses who will test our regular patients, as well as vulnerable and materially poor citizens in the city, for the virus. Even though we are in lockdown, essential clinical services like tuberculosis and HIV treatments continue to ensure that vulnerable clients still receive life-saving medicines. As far as our team members are concerned, personal protective equipment (PPE) is still in short supply; some of our nurses are equipped, but we are still waiting for the government to supply our entire clinical staff. In the meantime, we are mixing bleach and water to make disinfectants for cleaning and use as sanitizers, and we are hopeful that our partnership will improve people’s health and save lives.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and brother, Dave Tomlinson. Dave was a beloved part of the HOPE worldwide family who served in many capacities throughout his time with us, most recently as Chief Operating Officer before his retirement. He also played an important role in our Global Disaster Response and Community Service Brigades teams, serving alongside his wife, Angela. More than the roles he held, Dave was a cherished friend whose warmth, kindness, and genuine spirit touched so many people. His care for others was evident in the way he served, led, and built relationships with people around the world. Dave had a remarkable ability to encourage, uplift, and connect with people, reflecting God's love in both his leadership and his friendships. We will miss Dave deeply and are grateful for the many ways he gave of himself to HOPE worldwide and to the amazing people we get to serve. We’re holding Angela and their family close in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Dave’s presence will be deeply missed, but his faith, love, and example will remain in our hearts forever and his legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
