HYC Philly 1: Facing the Truth

Hope Worldwide • June 24, 2015

HYC Philly Track 1 is on its way and its participants have been working hard to serve the different communities around them. Here's a quick update about their involvement with the ODAAT (One Day At A Time) program.

"The Youth Corps had the incredibly impacting privilege to go and serve with ODAAT (One Day At A Time), a program focusing on recovering addicts to drugs, alcohol, and various other problems. We were broken up into teams, working on painting and cleaning both the men’s and women’s households, cleaning the street of trash, and doing some landscaping work to beautify the neighborhood.

We then had the opportunity to get a tour of ODAAT’s corporate office, led by none other than Mel Wells, the President and son of the founder of the program. We heard about the history and mantra of the program, as well as understanding the significant work that the program has been able to contribute to North Philadelphia. We saw their food bank, which serves over 200 HIV-positive families in the community every week.

But the most memorable moment was the sharing of stories by members and workers of ODAAT. The stories were honest, real, and inspiring."

On a recent visit to serve with HOPE worldwide Bolivia, I had the honor of meeting an incredible young man named Farid. Over the past 8 years, Farid has lived at Casa Esperanza, a boys home for abandoned children, and a longtime partner of HOPE ww Bolivia. For nearly a decade, HOPE ww has come alongside these vulnerable children with literacy, mentorship, and other support programs to help them graduate and find a job and community where they can thrive.
