Reflections – HSC South Africa Testimony by Ronine Zamor

Hope Worldwide • December 11, 2015

HSC South Africa has changed the way I view serving. I have served children and families abroad in the past, and even work with children on a daily basis. However, I have learned something completely new from the children and families I served in the crèches and the settlements. The second day we walked into our crèche, the kids were singing, jumping, and ran to us with smiles on their faces. Of course, I was happy to see them, but they were overjoyed! We did similar songs, lessons, and crafts as the day before. However, they seemed to enjoy them even more. What I saw in them that day was humility, contentment, and purity. It didn’t matter what we did, they just loved us being there.

So often in life, I can become critical, discontent, and unhappy. However, I have been given so much. These kids and families were content with so little. This trip has taught me how to be joyful, content and at peace. The children and families I got to serve taught me this invaluable lesson. There is such a need for food, jobs, shelter and education for these families that I am definite I will come back to serve again. But what I look forward to the most are the smiles on their faces, the happiness in their hearts and the joy that they will bring me as I get to serve them.

On a recent visit to serve with HOPE worldwide Bolivia, I had the honor of meeting an incredible young man named Farid. Over the past 8 years, Farid has lived at Casa Esperanza, a boys home for abandoned children, and a longtime partner of HOPE ww Bolivia. For nearly a decade, HOPE ww has come alongside these vulnerable children with literacy, mentorship, and other support programs to help them graduate and find a job and community where they can thrive.
