HOPE worldwide COVID-19 Global Highlights: UK
HOPE worldwide has been working with local authorities and other charities throughout the UK to serve people suffering from homelessness and drug addiction for a number of years, and in the current crisis, volunteers still step up to help. The spread and severity of the COVID-19 virus means vulnerable people need extra support--especially those without shelter--as self-isolation and social distancing are difficult. Long-term health conditions also increase the risk of infection. Working from home, the staff in our Homelessness Program use telephone contact and online resources to find housing and offer emotional and practical assistance for the homeless and those in danger of eviction. We also continue to maintain our sixteen-client Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Program. Several of our clients suffer from pre-existing health conditions, and confinement at home can exacerbate severe mental health problems like anxiety and depression. With regular phone conversations and deliveries of food and supplies, we provide daily support, and disciples in their area are also on call to help where needed. Finally, many disciples have responded to the deluge of requests for volunteers by enrolling in the countrywide NHS campaign to serve the elderly and other people who must self-isolate because of their health.
